Move: NJ to Los Angeles, CA

My wife and I recently relocated from Hudson County NJ to Los Angeles, CA. This was a huge move for us, and took a while to plan. Luckily, I found this site and read the reviews.

We were originally going to move ourselves. We priced out a Uhaul and ways to ship our cars. We were going to tow one and ship the other. All in all, the cost would have been pretty high considering we had a few tons of stuff and would need a larger truck, plus the hitch, gas, food, hotels/motels, etc...

We decided due to the high cost of moving ourselves, and that the neighborhood in LA didn't allow PODs or UPack trailers, we decided to pay movers to move our stuff for us. We got a few quotes from some other movers listed on this site. All priced us based between 4K and 6K pounds. I later figured out that we "might" have been low-balled just to get our business.

The last movers that we called were Moovers Inc. Being that they don't yet have an office in the Northeast, we used our estimate of 6K pounds to get an estimate from them. I spoke with Jayson and Matt and they emailed me an estimate not to exceed 6K pounds. Their price was on the higher end, but it was broken down in a clear and consise manner. They even told us that if we needed a shuttle, they would charge us the price of the shuttle with no profit margin, or if one, a very small one. They also told us that they would have a truck in our area on the days that we would need to move.

My wife and I decided to risk it based on the reviews here. So we signed with Moovers Inc. and arranged the move date. Jayson and Matt were very accommodating.

We were set to move on Monday, February 13th 2006. On February 11th, 2006, Nature threw a Nor'Easter at NYC and dumped around 2 feet of snow on the region. Now, Sunday night, my wife and I were frantic sealing up the last boxes and preparing for the driver to arrive. I had also spoken with the driver, Patrick, and he assured me that he would do everything in his power to get his truck in there and move us out.

Monday morning came and I had instructed him to park in the area that I secured with the township police. They were VERY nice and amazingly accommodating. Patrick was on his way.

At around 8am I got a call from Patrick telling me that he was in town, but was getting a Police escort through the town looking for parking. The snow was barely removed at this point and parking was next to impossible, but Patrick and the police were doing everything they could to get our move done on time. Well, the people in the "no parking zone" that we created didn't move (typical of that area), so the police told Patrick that he'd have to postpone the move, and could not even get a small truck in there until more snow was removed or melted. We had to postpone, and we chose to move out on Wednesday instead, which would give the township and people time to dig out.

Wednesday came and Patrick showed up with a shuttle truck that we agreed on. The snow was still tight, but Patrick was determined, and he found a parking space around the corner from our building. The move was on.

Upon entering our apartment, Patrick immediately began taking inventory and told us that we may be over 6K pounds by his estimates (which later turned out to be really close). He was very honest and made us very comfortable with the fact that the move may cost a bit more than we had anticipated. It's always hard to gauge an estimate from a distance without seeing what is there.

At any rate, the move went quickly and efficiently, and I got to speak with Patrick, who is probably one of the most enlightened guys I've come across in a while. This guy can talk about any subject with knowledge and conviction, it made the move go much smoother, and alleviated some of my concern about being overweight with our stuff.

Once the truck was packed up, Patrick gave me the number of the truck so that I could verify the weight reading, and told me he'd see me in LA.

About a week later, Patrick called me and offered me some bad news. He could not deliver on the date they promised. At this point, I was just happy that my stuff was on it's way. He then told me that he good news was that he could deliver a day earlier. WOW! This guy just made a trip through some really rough weather and was going to deliver AHEAD of schedule.

He delivered in just over a week and moved us in quickly. He had 2 other guys with him to help, and they completed the move in under a few hours. The thing that took a while was waiting for the loading elevator in our building.

I'm happy to say that none, and I mean NONE of our stuff was damaged. We had also rang in at about 1700 pounds over the estimate. I had called Matt from Moovers Inc. and we struck a deal that made me very happy. I still paid for the overages, of course, as I would have anyway. However, Moovers Inc. and I reached a middle ground very quickly and settled on the difference. All in all, with everything that happened including a monster of a snowstorm and lots of little events that delayed our move, I have to say that I am very happy with the job that Patrick and the team at Moovers , Inc. did for us. I'd employ their services again in a heartbeat.
